Glenohumeral Joint

The GH joint is a ball & socket joint that is formed by the articulation of the humeral head with the glenoid cavity of the scapula.
It is the most mobile joint in the human body, but this increased mobility makes it vulnerable to instability.
It’s stability comes from the rotator cuff muscles and proper functioning of the GH joint is needed to ensure the rotator cuff muslces can do their job effectively.
Assessing the GH
Begin with the patient’s arm straight up to the ceiling. From this position extend their straight arm towards their feet approx 15 degrees.
Keeping the patients arm in a pronated position, ask them to maintain this position and resist as you apply pressure towards the foot of the table.
A positive test is an inability to resist and maintain their arm position. This would indicate the need for a corresponding adjustment.

Adjusting the GH joint: GH Gap
✅ Make sure patient is fully relaxed. A straight & stiff elbow is a sign they are not relaxed enough.
✅ For the contact hand, make sure to utilize the web of the hand. Thumb of contact hand should be in patient’s armpit.
✅ Make sure to build up enough pretension by sinking into the contact.
✅ To ensure we are getting enough M —> L in our line of drive, lean your body over the patient prior to delivering the thrust. This helps gap the ball from the socket.
